In a letter to Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the interim government, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the United Nations fully supports his government’s efforts to achieve “inclusive and prosperous democracy”. In the letter, the UN chief congratulated Professor Yunus on taking over as the Chief Adviser of the interim government.
On Monday (August 19) night, the press wing of the Chief Adviser shared the letter with the media.
The UN Secretary General said the UN is committed to working with the Interim Government led by Professor Yunus and supporting the benefit of the people of Bangladesh through the Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team.
“I welcome the efforts to bring peace to Bangladesh and hold parliamentary elections,” Guterres said.
In the interim period, Professor Yunus will play an important role in ending violence, ensuring accountability, restoring law and order and paving the way for democratic elections and I hope your government will take inclusive initiatives taking into consideration the youths and women alongside the minority and indigenous communities,” he said.
Guterres said he relied on the interim government of Bangladesh to ensure full protection for all citizens, especially minorities and I strongly urge you to ensure welfare of the Rohingya refugees especially in the context of the deteriorating situation in Myanmar
Guterres said Bangladesh is standing at a crucial juncture in its history.
