Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) opened fire on Indian smugglers along Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah. The incident took place at Khosalpur border of Maheshpur upazila on Wednesday (August 14) afternoon. Assistant Director of Maheshpur BGB Saiful Islam confirmed this information through a press release.
A patrol team of BGB took position near border pillar 60/98-R after being tipped off that some smugglers from India were trying to smuggle illegal goods from India. In the early morning, when the Indian smugglers tried to cross the Bangladesh border with sacks full of illegal goods on their heads, the BGB chased them.
The smugglers came forward showing sharp weapons towards the BGB patrol team. To keep the situation under control, the patrol team first fired 5 to 6 rounds of blank shots, but the smugglers did not get scared and started coming forward more aggressively. They fled when the BGB fired four rounds at them. Later, 94 bottles of liquor left behind by the smugglers were recovered from the spot.
