A Dhaka court has placed former social welfare minister Dipu Moni on a four-day remand. The court also placed former deputy minister for youth and sports Arif Khan Joy on a five-day remand in the same case. A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed grocer Abu Sayed on a five-day remand in a case filed over the murder of grocer Abu Sayed in the capital’s Mohammadpur.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM)Court passed the order on Tuesday. Earlier, police produced Dipu Moni and Arif Khan Joy before the court and sought a 10-day remand. However, the accused cancelled the remand and appealed for bail.
After hearing both sides, the court granted a four-day remand for Dipu Moni and a five-day remand for Arif Khan Joy.
On Monday night, police arrested Dipu Moni from Baridhara and Arif Khan Joy from Dhanmondi in the capital. On August 13, a case was filed with the court against seven people, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, for the murder of grocer Abu Sayed. The CMM court of Dhaka ordered the officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station to take the first information report of the case.
The accused in the case are former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman, Additional Commissioner Shafiur Rahman, Md. Harun-or-Rashid and Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar. According to the case, the accused ordered to suppress the peaceful movement of students and people demanding quota reform in government jobs, which led to police firing and killing of Abu Sayed.
On the afternoon of July 19, thousands of students and people marched in support of the movement in the 40 feet area of Bosila of Mohammadpur. Abu Sayed was shot dead on the spot when police opened fire on the procession. Later, his body was sent to his village home in Boda Upazila of Panchagarh and buried there.
